So, Valve hasn't said anything or patched off the scam, should i just avoid trading?

Nah you should still keep trading, there are people that don't scam you. Bu tmost times if you want to be sure you're not being scammed you shoudl use sites like scrap.tf or backpack.tf (theyre run by the same people bu tthe prices are different >:/)

You should trade but invest in a middleman, because the fake items scam (which I assume you're talking about) is almost impossible to detect.

Allegedly, Valve has updated the trading system so that it warns you the trade looks suspicious if you're about to receive an item for a game you've never played, which makes regular trading possible again.
